At the tournament in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, he became the first player to win only left-handed players on the path to the title at the ATP tournament. His biggest success at Grand Slam tournaments was the male doubles title at Roland-Garros in 2008, paired with Luis Horna, when they became the first South American team to win the Grand Slam in the Open era. Due to an injury and surgery on his right knee in 2011, he did not play for two seasons. His best ranking was the 19th place in 2016.
